Each year, we try to make a New Year’s Resolution, but by the end of the first month, we often begin to lose interest in fulfilling it. The truth is, it is hard to keep up with the resolutions we set for ourselves. Why? Because sometimes the ideas or plans we create may not be realistic, or they are made during a strong emotional moment. Other times, we create these resolutions inspired by a motivational message or a goal that was not fulfilled the previous year. While resolutions are not inherently bad, how many of us continue with them throughout the year or simply lose interest?
This thought led me to reflect on the meaning and value of life. How does a person create meaningful moments and make each moment valuable? Are we allowing ourselves to remain present? The world we live in today is always on the go, or in pursuit of creating changes – changes that at times seem difficult to maintain. Like a resolution, it requires us to make a change, but this change is a personal commitment. The question is, how much thought do we place on the resolutions we create, and how intentional are we in keeping them? This leads me to ponder the following question:
“If you were given a day, week, month, or year to live, how would you choose to spend that time?”
- Would you spend it with loved ones?
- Would you spend it holding on to resentment, disappointments, memories of past trauma, or the people who hurt you, etc.?
- Would you forgive more?
- Implement more self-care?
- Allow yourself to be more compassionate?
- Become more empathic?
- Would you travel more or fill your bucket list?
Take some time to think about this question and process how you would want to live your last days if you were told how long you had.
Now, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life. How are you going to seize the day?”
Reflect on the first question, and based on your answer, seize the day by living in the here and now. Focus on what is important to you and create lasting memories. Make every moment more meaningful and value your time.
